Christian Grey, Magic Mike, and Mommy Porn

“The world has changed.”

Cate Blanchett quoted these words in the beginning of my favorite movie The Lord of the Rings. (I consider the whole trilogy one movie.)

Truly, the world has changed, but lately it’s changed in a way that has me as a man, wondering. The rise of Mommy Porn. Before you report me and this blog, I am not talking about ” hot mom porn.”

WARNING: DO NOT SEARCH MOMMY PORN! YOU WILL NOT GET INFO!

In order to explain, let’s go to the beginning. For a while now, the Fifty Shades of Grey series has become something of a phenomenon. Book 1 has spent 129 in top 100 of Amazon as of July 23. It’s safe to say this series is a big deal, along with a movie deal in the works.

For the uninformed, Fifty Shades of Grey is about a naive collegiate virgin who gets caught up in a BDSM lifestyle with a “perfect” mid-twenties billionaire. The story is basically Twilight for adults minus supernatural elements and a whole lot of sex.

At first I thought nothing of this, but one day in the elevator I saw a woman reading it. No big deal. A week later, the lady at the gas station was reading it on a Kindle. I found out because whenever I see someone with a Kindle, I have to ask “What are you reading?” Now, my interest was piqued. I read the reviews on Amazon. It seemed like erotica to me, but if this series was such a phenom, I had to read it. Future bestsellers should read what’s bestselling now in my opinion. A week later, she was almost finished book 2. Now, I had to see what was so intriguing.

I got a copy from the library. It reminded me of Twlight with the protagonist giving Christian Grey numerous superlatives on every page after she met him. I planned on reading until I got to the first, of many, sex scenes.

Um…yeah. I never read erotica, but I have seen porn. This was printed porn. Now, this is nothing against the author or fans of the book, but this wasn’t for me. Now, I have no problem with a sex scene. I love True Blood and Game of Thrones on HBO, but this one scene was enough to make me say “This isn’t a novel. This is a sex guide. Let me take some notes.”

Despite only reading around to page 100, I read enough to wonder if the Twi-moms who hearkened back to the youthful days of first love now demand the young adult days of wild sexuality?

Once Fifty Shades was out of my system, here comes trailers for Magic Mike? After years of Showgirls, Striptease, music videos, True Blood, and Game of Thrones, it’s time women get to see naked men. This movie, like Fifty Shades, is not for me, but the ladies. and the ladies went out, especially the ones from my church. Yup, the church ladies need their Magic Mike.

I sit in front of these for fifty-something ladies every Sunday. While I was watching the worship band get prepped, I heard them talk to another lady on how they saw Magic Mike and had to listen to Christian music for days after watching, but at least they admitted to enjoying it. Before service started, I found a poster for Magic Mike on my iPad and showed them. They went into a tizzy. One fanned herself. They mentioned how they liked  Joe Manganiello, Channing Tatum, and all of them went crazy for Matthew McConaughey.

For a moment I was weirded out, but then I realized what’s wrong with a group of ladies going looked at naked guys for two hours, when old men do it almost daily across the world either by porn, in public, or strip clubs?

Has the world changed? Are we entering into a new sexual revolution where the older ladies are saying “We want young men and we want sex?” It could well be. Mommy Porn may be another avenue that publishers and Hollywood go to make money or is it deeper? Are we a society that has focused on the naked ladies too much, but now about to give the ladies some action?

What are your thoughts? Have you read Fifty Shades of Grey? Have you seen Magic Mike?

  1. Having seen Magic Mike, twice and currently reading Fiftty Shades of Grey I think it really says a lot about women of todays society. I already knew what the book was about but decided to find out for myself. I was dead on. I think we’ve come into the time of women’s sexual awakening. Publically anyway. We see it all the time with men. They (not all) sleep with women left and right, go to strip clubs, have Playboys. But its looked down upon when a woman does the same. I know I’ve even said it myself. Why is it that men can run from one woman’s bed to another and no one thinks anything of it, yet when a woman does it she’s automatically labeled a whore, a slut? It makes no sense. We’ve come so far as a whole with Women’s Rights and such but even now you still see sexism everywhere you go. I think times are definitely changing. Women have wants and needs, desires and fantisies too. And they’re finally “coming out of the closet” so to speak.
